How to choose the quietest projector – Silent Project Buyer Guide
Because there are so many different projectors on the market today, it’s pretty easy to get confused. I have created this quick guide to help you choose the best quiet projector.
Light sources
Any projector you’ve seen before is either powered by one of the following three light sources: laser, standard lamp or LED (light emitting diode). Laser projectors are usually brighter than other light sources and give better contrast than projectors using standard light sources.
Standard types can last up to 3000-4000 hours in normal mode and up to 5,000 hours in eco mode. They are the most affordable option of the three light sources.
LED light source projectors have been proven to last up to 20, 000 hours. They give better color control than standard lamps. They are the quietest of the three options and give smaller footprints compared to standard lamps. Because LED lamps are energy efficient, the often don’t require fan for cooling.
Resolution
The number of pixel a projector is capable of displaying determines its resolution. The more the pixels the crispier the image will be. High resolutions are important especially for home projectors because the user will sit closer to the screen. High resolution projector allows the user to sit close to the screen without getting pixilated image.
Projector resolutions range from 480p, 720p, 1080p for high definition viewing and 4k ultra high definition for superior and sharp images. The best quietest projector should have the highest quality for clear movie images.
Contrast ratio
The difference between the brightest and darkest areas of a picture is known as contrast. A quiet projector that has high contrast ration will allow you to see a well defined shadow detail adding a sense of dimension and depth to the picture.
Because the amount of light in a room can influence the contrast, it’s important to pay more attention to contrast ration in home projectors than for business projectors. In darkened rooms as it’s the case with home theaters, contrast is more noticeable. On the other hand, business projectors are in most cases used in highly lit rooms where contrast is washed out by the additional light.
Brightness
Brightness is measured using lumens. Higher lumens allow for a brighter projection at a given distance. Color brightness measures how red, blue and yellow colors will be: higher color brightness allows for more details.
On the other hand white brightness measures the total amount of white light a projector emits without taking into account color brightness.
So it’s very important to compare the two type’s brightness when shopping for a new projector. If white brightness is higher than the color brightness, the image details may be dull or dark.
If you are buying a business projector, it’s important to go for a brighter output, so go for one with higher lumen rating in both color and white brightness. Since you will be using the projector in a well lit room, the quiet projector should be able to compete with light in the room and give high quality images at the same time.
For home projectors it should not only be quiet but should also give enough brightness for rich color contrast. Most of the home projectors are designed for rooms with no lighting and so brightness shouldn’t be an issue. However if your home theater has some ambient lighting, you will need a brighter projector.
Lens zoom
If you will be placing your projector in different places where you won’t have the control of the placement of the projector or screen size, you can use the lens to adjust image size. You wont have to move the projector farther or closer to the screen but rather you will adjust the image using the lens zoom.
A greater zoom ration will allow you to make the image smaller or larger. For instance a 1.2x zoom gives an image 20% bigger than the minimum size whereas 2.0x zoom gives an image twice bigger than the minimum size. Not all projectors have this feature, so be on the lookout before buying.
Lens shift and keystone correction
Lens shift allows the user to mechanically adjust the angle of the lens by shifting the lens up, down or sideways.
Because it’s almost impossible to place the projector perpendicular to the screen, keystone correction in this case corrects distortion by adjusting the image to be displayed as perfect square on the screen/wall.
Keystone correction is available in almost every projector. Lens shift is only available on high end home projectors and its mostly helpful if you will be install the projector semi-permanently.
